The Olde Town Grill in the former Quality Bakery

The building at 108 East Second Street served as Winslow’s federal post office from the early 1900s until the new USPS building opened at Third Street and Williamson Avenue in 1936. In January 1936, the Winslow Mail announced that the Quality Bakery – formerly on Kinsley Avenue – was reopening in this new location as the “Most Modern Bakery in Northern Arizona.”

Proprietor Fred Fisher procured a new doughnut machine, bread-cutting-and-wrapping machine, and Dalton Rotary oven, which had the capacity to bake six thousand loaves of bread a day. The bakery was renovated again in 1947 by owner Kenny Hutchinson, who enlarged the baking area, hired more employees, and remodeled the store front with new fixtures and ivory-and-green enameled showcases.

The building had a series of owners and operations in subsequent years, most recently sculptor Dan Lutzick of Snowdrift Art Space from 1994 to 2002; and the Scoop – Winslow’s advertising circular that announced births, deaths, and other news items three times a week – from 2002 to 2017.

Owners Paul and Kelly Rada opened the Olde Town Grill in the former bakery in October 2021, fulfilling their dream of operating a restaurant in a historic Route 66 building and providing “quality meals and great service at a good price to customers here in our hometown of Winslow.”  

The Radas undertook the building’s extensive renovations using local contractors, including AZE Electrical Contractors and Miller’s Waterworks. The Olde Town Grill has a full-service bar and serves lunch and dinner as well as breakfast on the weekends. (https://oldetowngrill.com/)
